Chelsea crashed out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night after suffering a dramatic 6-5 penalty shootout defeat to Liverpool at Anfield, following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
Morgan Rogers gave Chelsea the lead from the penalty spot in the 40th minute before Cody Gakpo equalised three minutes later after Wesley Fofana handled the ball inside the penalty area.
Both teams created opportunities to secure victory in the second half, but neither could find a winning goal, forcing the fourth-round encounter into a penalty shootout.
Although Chelsea showed determination throughout the contest, defensive mistakes, missed opportunities and three unsuccessful penalties contributed to their elimination.
Here are five players whose performances attracted attention following the defeat.
- Wesley Fofana
Fofana endured the most difficult evening among Chelsea’s players. His handball gifted Liverpool the penalty from which Gakpo equalised shortly after Chelsea had taken the lead.

The defender later missed Chelsea’s decisive penalty in the shootout, sending his effort over the crossbar after Joe Gomez had converted for Liverpool.
His two costly moments significantly influenced the outcome.
- Valentin Barco
Introduced in the 68th minute, Barco was expected to provide fresh energy as Chelsea searched for a winner.
However, his penalty during the shootout struck the inside of the left post and bounced away, denying Chelsea an opportunity to maintain pressure on Liverpool.
- Emmanuel Emegha
Emegha made his Chelsea debut after replacing Danny Welbeck in the 68th minute.
Although he offered a different attacking option, he could not provide the breakthrough Chelsea needed.
His penalty was subsequently saved by Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, allowing the hosts to regain the advantage.
- Josh Acheampong
Acheampong received a yellow card in the 50th minute and faced a demanding contest against Liverpool’s attacking players.
However, he also produced an important late defensive block that prevented Liverpool from scoring.
While Chelsea’s defensive performance can be examined collectively, Acheampong’s contribution was not among the decisive errors responsible for the defeat.
- Morgan Rogers
Rogers was one of Chelsea’s more influential attacking players, scoring the opening penalty and converting again during the shootout.

He also forced Mamardashvili into a second-half save and had another effort blocked.
Although he could not deliver a winning goal, his performance was largely positive, making it difficult to assign him significant responsibility for Chelsea’s elimination.
Ultimately, Fofana’s handball and the three missed shootout penalties proved the clearest individual setbacks for Chelsea.
Liverpool advanced to the quarter-finals, leaving Chelsea to reflect on another missed opportunity in a closely contested knockout fixture.
