The Federal Government of Nigeria is set to receive the first batch of 268 Nigerians being evacuated from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals.

The returnees are expected to arrive at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Thursday, June 11, 2026, aboard an Air Peace evacuation flight.

According to a statement by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Sola Enikanolaiye, he will receive the evacuees on behalf of the Federal Government upon their arrival.

The ministry disclosed that the screening exercise being conducted by the High Commission of Nigeria in Pretoria for Nigerians willing to return home voluntarily has been extended until Sunday, June 14, 2026, to allow more affected persons to register.

The Acting High Commissioner in Pretoria, Alexander Ajayi, is expected to accompany the first group of evacuees on the flight scheduled to land at about 5:00 a.m.

The ministry stated that arrangements have been made through relevant ministries, departments and agencies to ensure proper reception, documentation and support for the returnees.

It added that the government remains committed to providing assistance and protection to Nigerians affected by crises abroad, stressing that the welfare and safety of citizens overseas remain a key component of Nigeria’s foreign policy.
