The Federal Ministry of Works has announced the temporary closure of sections of the First Niger Bridge from September 7 to September 21 to allow for maintenance and repair works.
The Acting Federal Controller of Works in Anambra State, Timothy Emenike, disclosed this on Friday while speaking with journalists in Awka.
Emenike urged members of the public, particularly motorists who regularly use the bridge, to take note of the planned closure and make alternative travel arrangements.
He advised motorists and commuters to use the Second Niger Bridge as an alternative route during the maintenance period.
According to him, the maintenance exercise will include repairs to portions of the bridge that have been vandalised.
Emenike acknowledged that the closure could cause inconvenience to motorists and commuters but said efforts would be made to complete the work within the shortest possible time.
He explained that the maintenance would be carried out both day and night to accelerate completion and reduce the duration of the disruption.
The federal controller appealed to road users to cooperate with the authorities and comply with diversion signs and other traffic management measures around the affected routes.
He said adherence to the directives would help minimise delays and ensure the smooth movement of traffic throughout the maintenance period.
