The Federal Government of Nigeria has declared Friday, June 12, 2026, a public holiday in observance of Nigeria’s Democracy Day.

The announcement was made on Thursday by the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government.

According to the minister, the annual celebration provides an opportunity to honour the sacrifices, courage, and resilience of Nigerians who played significant roles in the country’s democratic journey and contributed to the establishment of democratic governance.

He noted that June 12 remains a landmark date in Nigeria’s history, symbolising the collective struggle for democratic rule and the enduring commitment of citizens to the principles of freedom, justice, and good governance.

Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to safeguarding democratic values, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance.

He stressed that the government would continue to uphold these principles while working to strengthen democratic institutions across the country.

The minister also assured Nigerians that the Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with relevant security agencies, would continue to enhance internal security measures aimed at protecting lives and property nationwide.

According to him, a peaceful and secure environment remains essential for democratic stability and national development.

He called on citizens to use the occasion for reflection on the nation’s democratic progress and to renew their commitment to responsible citizenship, national unity, and respect for the law.

“As we commemorate this historic day, Nigerians are encouraged to remain law-abiding, support democratic institutions, and recognise that the strength of any democracy ultimately depends on the character and participation of its citizens,” the minister stated.

The Federal Government urged Nigerians across the country to celebrate the occasion peacefully and continue supporting efforts aimed at building a stronger and more prosperous democracy.
