A 40-year-old farmer, Usman Jibrin, has died following a violent confrontation between farmers and herders in Guda Village, Ningi Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed that four suspects were arrested in connection with the incident, which occurred on September 23, 2026, at Guda Hill and a nearby herders’ settlement.

According to the police, the confrontation began after cattle allegedly entered a farmland and destroyed crops, prompting three farmers to pursue the animals to a nearby herders’ settlement.

Police spokesperson Nafiu Habib said an argument subsequently developed into a physical confrontation, leaving the three farmers injured.

The situation reportedly escalated when some youths from Guda Village mobilised in retaliation and allegedly set houses in the herders’ settlement ablaze, resulting in property damage.

Officers from the Ningi Police Division responded to the disturbance, restored order and evacuated the injured farmers to General Hospital, Ningi, for medical attention.

However, Jibrin later died while receiving treatment.

Following preliminary investigations, police operatives arrested four suspects believed to be connected to the violence.

The suspects are being investigated for alleged criminal conspiracy, causing grievous hurt, mischief by fire and culpable homicide.

Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, subsequently directed that the suspects be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

Aliyu expressed condolences to the deceased farmer’s family and sympathised with residents whose properties were destroyed during the confrontation.

He warned against retaliatory attacks and urged residents to allow security agencies to investigate disputes rather than resorting to violence.

The police commissioner also appealed to farmers and herders to resolve disagreements through dialogue and established conflict-resolution mechanisms.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to investigating the incident and ensuring that anyone found responsible is prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The circumstances surrounding Jibrin’s death and the involvement of individual suspects remain under investigation.
