Former Bayelsa State Governor and ex-Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Sylva announced his resignation in a letter dated August 31, 2026, addressed to the APC Chairman of Ward 4 in Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
In the letter, Sylva, who described himself as a founding member of the APC, said his decision followed extensive consultations with his family, associates, colleagues and supporters.
He accused the party of drifting away from the principles and ideals upon which it was established.
“Having consulted widely with my family, associates, colleagues and sympathisers, I wish to formally tender my resignation from the All Progressives Congress, APC, with immediate effect,” Sylva stated in the letter.
The former governor also criticised the current leadership of the party, alleging that its approach to political affairs had contributed to the erosion of what he described as basic standards of decency and morality in politics.
Sylva’s resignation comes amid increasing political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, with several political actors and groups repositioning themselves ahead of the polls.
The former governor was also previously linked to allegations surrounding an alleged coup plot against President Bola Tinubu’s administration in 2025, an allegation that has featured in the political controversies surrounding him.
