The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Ola Olukoyede, has directed that an apology be conveyed to Professor Eyo Ekpe, Deputy Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH), and members of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) over the May 12, 2026 incident involving EFCC personnel and hospital staff.

The directive followed the receipt and review of a preliminary report on the incident.

In a statement, Olukoyede acknowledged that the welfare and well-being of Nigerians remain central to the Commission’s mandate and expressed regret over the discomfort the incident caused medical personnel and members of the public.

He reaffirmed the EFCC’s decision to conduct a full investigation into the matter, assuring that any officer found to have acted outside the bounds of professional conduct would face appropriate internal disciplinary measures.

“The unfortunate incident will not detract the Commission from pressing ahead with the execution of its mandate in any part of Nigeria,” the EFCC Chairman stated.

Olukoyede also emphasised the need for stronger collaboration with stakeholders to address underlying issues and prevent a recurrence of similar incidents in the future.

He further appealed to members of the Nigerian Medical Association and other professional bodies to continue supporting the EFCC in its efforts to combat economic and financial crimes, as well as corruption across the country.
