Operatives of the Enugu Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have arrested the Managing Director of Debasilio Construction and Estate Development Limited, Basil Iwoba Ochili, over an alleged ₦128 million land transaction.
The anti-graft agency said Ochili was arrested following a petition alleging that he obtained ₦128 million under false pretences in connection with the purported sale of five plots of land in Awka, Anambra State.
According to the EFCC, the complainant alleged that sometime in September 2022, Ochili presented himself as the owner of five plots of land located beside the Anambra State Secretariat, near Stamford Hotel at Aroma Junction, Awka.
The agency said the complainant subsequently agreed to purchase the property for ₦128 million, with the money allegedly paid into the account of Ochili’s company, Debasilio Construction and Estate Development Limited.
The complainant, however, allegedly could not take possession of the property after making payment.
EFCC PROBES OWNERSHIP OF LAND
The EFCC said its preliminary investigation indicated that the land allegedly encroached on property belonging to the Anambra State Government Secretariat.
Investigators further alleged that Ochili was aware of the issue surrounding the property before the transaction but proceeded with the sale.
The commission also alleged that instead of refunding the complainant’s money after the transaction encountered problems, the suspect issued two cheques which were subsequently dishonoured.
According to the EFCC, preliminary findings further indicated that part of the ₦128 million received from the complainant was allegedly used to settle existing debts.
The commission also raised questions about the tax compliance status of Debasilio Construction and Estate Development Limited as part of its ongoing investigation.
SUSPECT TO FACE COURT AFTER INVESTIGATION — EFCC
The EFCC said Ochili would be charged to court upon completion of its investigation.
As of the commission’s announcement, the allegations remained under investigation and had not been established by a court.
Ochili and Debasilio Construction and Estate Development Limited are entitled to respond to the allegations and to the presumption of innocence unless and until guilt is established through the judicial process.
The EFCC said investigations into the matter were continuing.
