The Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned the cybercrime trial involving Omoyele Sowore to October 2 following a dispute over the appearance of a subpoenaed Department of State Services witness.
At Monday’s proceedings, Sowore’s counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, SAN, told the court that the defence was expecting a DSS official to appear for examination.
The defence said the DSS Director-General, Oluwatosin Ajayi, had initially been subpoenaed, but an earlier understanding provided for another official to appear on his behalf.
DSS counsel, Akinlolu Kehinde, SAN, argued that producing a defence witness was not the prosecution’s responsibility and maintained that the defence should proceed with its case.
Olumide-Fusika also raised reports that the DSS had earlier planned to seek a lengthy adjournment of the trial to allow Sowore to participate in electioneering ahead of the 2027 general election.
He questioned why the prosecution was now seeking to proceed with the case and asked the court to allow the defence another opportunity to secure the witness.
Kehinde said he was unaware of any instruction to seek a long adjournment and maintained that the prosecution was ready to proceed.
After hearing both sides, Justice Mohammed Umar gave the defence another opportunity to produce the subpoenaed witness.
The court subsequently adjourned the case to October 2 for continuation of Sowore’s defence.
Sowore is standing trial over social media posts he made in August 2025. He has denied wrongdoing.
The prosecution had earlier closed its case, after which the court rejected Sowore’s no-case submission and ordered him to enter his defence.
