An Independent Committee of Inquiry has commenced investigations into the reported deaths of 37 persons while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC.
The investigation followed the inauguration of the committee by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, as part of efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the reported deaths.
Secretary of the committee, Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma, SAN, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Thursday.
Chiroma said members of the committee held their inaugural meeting immediately after their inauguration and adopted a work plan to guide the investigation.
According to him, the committee will visit relevant locations, engage government agencies and interview survivors, suspects and other persons considered to possess information that could assist the inquiry.
The committee will also obtain documents and other materials considered necessary to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
Chiroma disclosed that the committee’s medical team had commenced work to determine the causes, mechanisms and manner of the reported deaths.
As part of the investigation, the committee appealed to members of the public, relevant organisations and other stakeholders to cooperate with the inquiry.
It also announced plans to invite memoranda from individuals and organisations with information relevant to the investigation.
Further details concerning the submission of memoranda, including arrangements for physical presentations, are expected to be announced subsequently.
The committee pledged to conduct what it described as a thorough, fair, transparent and evidence-based investigation into the circumstances surrounding the reported deaths.
It also assured the public that updates would be provided as the inquiry progresses.
