The Catholic Bishop of Uyo Diocese, Most Rev. Dr John Ebebe Ayah, has ordained Rev. Alpha Effiong into the Catholic priesthood, increasing the number of priests serving the diocese.
The ordination ceremony drew Catholic faithful from different communities and was attended by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Calabar, Most Rev. Joseph Ekuwem, alongside clergy and other guests.
Delivering his homily, Bishop Ayah emphasised the responsibilities associated with the priesthood and acknowledged the need for more priests as older members of the clergy advance in age.
“Those of us who were ordained many years ago are getting older. We need more priests, but it will take our time. The Church is not rushing,” the bishop said.
BISHOP STRESSES CAREFUL PRIESTLY FORMATION
Ayah said the need for additional priests should not lead the Church to compromise the formation required of candidates preparing for the ministry.
He also highlighted the roles of families and the Church in developing future priests, urging parents to instil discipline and strong values in their children.
The bishop cautioned parents against confusing genuine parental affection with excessive indulgence, stressing the importance of balanced upbringing and character formation.
Fr Effiong was ordained a deacon on January 4, 2026, before completing the remaining stages leading to his priestly ordination.
He hails from Orukim Uda, under St Paul’s Parish, Afi Uda, and is also known for his involvement in music as a drummer.
His ordination formally admits him into the presbyterium of the Catholic Diocese of Uyo, where he will undertake priestly and pastoral responsibilities under the authority of the diocesan bishop.
