Torrential rains have caused severe flooding across the southeastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, leaving at least 23 people dead, more than 40 missing.

Rescue teams, including search-and-rescue dogs, combed through mud and debris in Juiz de Fora, where 18 fatalities were reported. Nearby Uba recorded at least seven deaths. At least 440 residents have been displaced as swollen rivers and landslides damaged homes and infrastructure.

Firefighters Major, Demetrius Goulart reported over 20 landslides and multiple collapsed homes in Juiz de Fora. “Many people were inside their homes at night when it was raining. We have hope. We found a boy this morning under the rubble. It took the team two hours of work,” he said.

Mayor Margarida Salomao described the floods as “the saddest day of the administration,” noting that February has been the wettest on record, with more than 180mm of rain falling in just four hours.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva pledged full government support, emphasizing humanitarian assistance, restoration of basic services, and aid for reconstruction.
