A Russian military officer has been killed in a bomb attack in Sevastopol, Crimea, with Russian authorities arresting a woman suspected of assassinating on behalf of Ukrainian special services.
The incident occurred on Thursday in the Russian-annexed territory. The regional governor, Mikhail Razvozhayev, confirmed the attack but did not disclose the identity of the officer or the suspect.
Unofficial Russian Telegram channels identified the victim as Robert Shageyev, describing him as a former Ukrainian naval officer who switched allegiance to Russia following Moscow’s annexation of Crimea in 2014.
The channels claimed Shageyev had commanded the Ukrainian submarine Zaporizhzhia at the time.
Russian state news agency TASS, citing the Federal Security Service, reported that the arrested suspect is a Russian national. Ukraine has not immediately commented on the allegation.
The attack took place in Sevastopol, the largest city in Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014 in a move widely rejected internationally.
Russia has previously accused Ukraine of involvement in a series of assassinations targeting senior military personnel and individuals linked to Moscow’s war effort. Ukrainian sources have claimed responsibility for some of the attacks while denying involvement in others.
Meanwhile, Razvozhayev said five people were killed in Sevastopol overnight during an operation to dispose of an explosive device.
