Armed bandits have attacked a secondary school in Kogi State, killing three people, including a school vice principal and a six-year-old boy, in a violent raid that has heightened security concerns in the area.
The attack occurred on Wednesday morning at Government Secondary School, Iluke Bunu, located in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area. Residents were thrown into panic as heavily armed assailants invaded the community.
Confirming the incident, the Kogi State Police Command said the attackers, believed to be bandits, arrived in large numbers on approximately 40 motorcycles and were suspected to be attempting a mass abduction of students and residents.

According to a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, ASP Saliu Afusat, security agencies responded swiftly after receiving distress calls from the area.
The Divisional Police Officer of Kabba ‘A’ Division reportedly mobilised a joint security team comprising police officers, tactical units, and personnel from the Police Mobile Force. Soldiers and local vigilante groups already deployed in the community also joined the operation.
Security operatives engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, forcing them to retreat into nearby forests before they could carry out their plans.
The police stated that preliminary investigations have not established any confirmed case of mass abduction, although assessments are ongoing to determine the full impact of the attack.
Authorities confirmed that three people lost their lives during the incident. The victims were identified as Mr Ganiyu Anifowose, Vice Principal of UBE Secondary/Primary School, Iluke; 70-year-old Sunday Jacob Alhassan; and six-year-old Sunday Ayele.
The Command also disclosed that one of the attackers was killed during the exchange of gunfire, while a member of the joint security team sustained gunshot wounds and is currently receiving medical treatment.
In response to the attack, the Commissioner of Police has directed security operatives to intensify bush-combing operations and increase patrols across the affected communities to prevent further incursions.

Joint security forces have continued operations in the area to track and arrest the fleeing suspects.
The police appealed to residents to remain calm and support security agencies by providing useful information that could assist ongoing investigations and security operations.
Authorities assured the public that updates would be provided as investigations progress and efforts to restore security in the area continue.
