Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Joash Amupitan, has urged traditional rulers to use their influence to caution politicians against violence, hostility and inflammatory campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Amupitan made the call in Minna during the turbaning of INEC Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, as Gimbiyan Raya Kasan Minna at the palace of the Emir of Minna.
The INEC chairman said political parties, candidates and their supporters should concentrate on issues and avoid campaigns capable of creating tension or disrupting public order.

He stressed that voting is a constitutional right and appealed to traditional rulers to use their moral authority and influence within their communities to encourage peaceful political conduct.
Amupitan said traditional institutions have an important role to play in maintaining stability throughout the electoral process, particularly by counselling politicians and their supporters against actions that could lead to violence.
He also commended the Minna Emirate for recognising the contributions of women to leadership and community development.
Responding to the conferment of the traditional title, Oriaran-Anthony expressed gratitude to the Emir of Minna, describing the honour as a call to greater service.

She said the recognition would strengthen her commitment to community development and increased engagement with young people, children and women.
Oriaran-Anthony also urged parents to provide equal opportunities for their children irrespective of gender, saying both boys and girls should be supported to fulfil their potential and contribute to their families, communities and the country.
