The Adeleke Campaign Council has raised concerns over the alleged deployment of armed security personnel to the residence of the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, on Saturday, the day of the governorship election.
The campaign council, in a statement by its spokesperson, Pelumi Olajengbesi, alleged that more than 10 black Hilux vehicles carrying armed personnel arrived at the Speaker’s residence and surrounded the premises.
It further claimed that the residence had been effectively sealed off and that people inside were reportedly prevented from leaving.
The council, however, acknowledged that it could not independently establish the purpose of the security operation or determine whether the personnel were deployed for protection or another official assignment.
“We have received reports that the residence of the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, has been surrounded by armed security personnel who reportedly arrived in more than 10 black Hilux vehicles,” the statement said.
The campaign council called on the relevant security authorities to immediately explain the reason for the deployment and the reported restriction of movement.
Olajengbesi said attempts to contact the Commissioner of Police overseeing election security and the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the election were unsuccessful.
He also said efforts to reach the Police Situation Room failed, alleging that the publicly provided telephone number was switched off.
The council urged security agencies to ensure that their election-day operations did not create fear or intimidation among residents.
It also appealed to Osun residents to remain peaceful and law-abiding while awaiting clarification from the authorities.
“The people of Osun State must be allowed to come out peacefully and decide their future according to their own conscience, without intimidation or interference,” the campaign council said.
