Indonesia has lifted its ban on Elon Musk’s Grok chatbot, allowing the artificial intelligence service to resume operations after X Corp committed to tighter compliance with the country’s laws on online content.
The Southeast Asian nation had suspended Grok three weeks ago over concerns about the circulation of sexualized, inappropriate AI generated images, becoming the first country to block access to the chatbot.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs on Sunday, the government said the resumption of Grok’s services was being carried out on a conditional basis and under strict supervision.
According to the ministry, X Corp submitted a written commitment outlining concrete measures to improve service, prevent abuse. The government said the commitment would form the basis for ongoing evaluation and monitoring.
A senior ministry official, Alexander Sabar, said several layered safeguards had been introduced to reduce misuse of the chatbot, adding that authorities would continue to verify compliance.
Indonesia said the decision to restore access does not mark the end of regulatory oversight, stressing that enforcement actions would follow if violations recur.
X Corp and xAI, the company that operates Grok, did not issue an immediate response to the announcement.
Indonesia has maintained strict laws – governing online content, particularly material considered pornographic or harmful to minors, and has warned technology platforms to adhere fully to local regulations.
