Austria is considering a nationwide ban on social media use for children under the age of 14 as political parties begin consultations on stricter online safety measures for minors.
Experts from various political parties are scheduled to meet to develop a detailed framework for the proposal, including methods for enforcing age verification on digital platforms.
Officials say Australia’s recent approach to age verification is being studied as a possible model for Austria’s own system, particularly in ensuring that minors are effectively restricted from accessing social media accounts.
The proposal follows growing concern among parents, educators, and child protection advocates over the impact of social media on mental health, exposure to harmful content, and online exploitation of young users.
If adopted, the policy would require social media companies operating in Austria to implement stronger safeguards to prevent underage registration, with penalties for platforms that fail to comply.
Government sources say discussions are still at an early stage, and any final decision will depend on legal reviews, technical feasibility, and consultations with technology companies and civil society groups.
