Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese has appointed the country’s Defence Department chief, Greg Moriarty, as the new Ambassador to the United States, replacing Kevin Rudd who is stepping down from the role.
Albanese announced the appointment on Sunday, stating that Moriarty, who currently serves as Secretary of the Department of Defence, will take over diplomatic duties in Washington.
He described Moriarty as an outstanding public servant with vast experience in national security and international relations.
Rudd, a former Prime Minister of Australia, had earlier indicated that he would leave the ambassadorial post in March, a year earlier than expected, following public criticism from United States President, Donald Trump.
Trump had criticised Rudd during an event at the White House in October, saying he did not have a favourable view of the Australian envoy.
Albanese confirmed that the Trump administration had been formally informed of Moriarty’s nomination and had expressed satisfaction with the choice.
The appointment comes at a time when Australia is seeking to maintain strong diplomatic, defence cooperation with the United States amid shifting global security dynamics.
Moriarty’s background in defence and security is expected to play a key role in strengthening bilateral relations between both countries, particularly in areas of military collaboration and regional stability in the Asia Pacific.
