Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has disbursed scholarships to 4,183 students from Kano North Senatorial District studying at the Federal College of Education (Technical), Bichi, Kano State.

The beneficiaries, made up of male and female students enrolled in the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) and Degree programmes, received N20,000 and N50,000 respectively.

The scholarship disbursement exercise took place on Wednesday at the College Theatre Hall and was carried out by a delegation led by the Chief of Staff to the Deputy President of the Senate, Prof. Muhammad Abdallah.

A statement issued on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to Senator Barau on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, said the delegation was received by the Provost of the institution, Dr. Kabiru Bichi, who was represented by the Deputy Provost, Dr. Bashir Abubakar, alongside members of the college management.

The statement noted that Senator Barau has executed several intervention projects at the institution, including the construction of academic blocks, provision of solar streetlights, reading halls and other critical infrastructure.

He is also currently constructing an administrative block at the permanent site of the college.

Speaking at the event, the Deputy Provost, Dr. Bashir Abubakar, described the scholarship intervention as life-changing, noting that the institution has consistently benefited from the scheme over the past three years.

“Every year, the number of beneficiaries keeps increasing. This clearly shows that the Deputy President of the Senate places education as a top priority,” he said, adding that the provision of solar streetlights at both the temporary and permanent sites has significantly improved security on campus.

He urged the students to make judicious use of the funds, particularly for registration, other academic needs, while conveying the appreciation of the management and students to Senator Barau.

Also speaking, the Special Adviser on Women Affairs to the Deputy President of the Senate, Hajiya Yardada Bichi, disclosed that about 60 per cent of the beneficiaries are women, stressing that educating a woman amounts to educating the entire society.

Some of the beneficiaries also expressed gratitude to Senator Barau for what they described as timely and impactful support to their academic pursuits, noting that the scholarship would ease their financial burden and enhance their focus on studies.
