The management of Gombe State University has confirmed an early-morning security incident at one of its female hostels, in which a final-year student was attacked by an intruder.
In a statement issued on Monday, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Hadu Ligari, said the incident occurred during the academic break while students were preparing for exams and project defences.
“An unfortunate incident occurred in the early hours of today at the Female Hostel, where a final-year student who was preparing for her project defence was attacked by an intruder,” the statement read.
Ligari explained that university security personnel responded promptly after being alerted, taking immediate steps to secure the area and ensure the safety of other students.
“University Security responded swiftly to the situation, and immediate action was taken to ensure the safety of the affected student and others within the hostel,” he stated.
The Vice-Chancellor and other members of the university management reportedly visited the scene to assess the situation firsthand.
The student sustained injuries, including a deep cut on her hands, while defending herself during the attack. She has received medical attention and is currently in stable condition.
The university reassured students, staff, parents, and the general public that security measures on campus are being strengthened to prevent similar incidents in the future.
“The University reassures all students, staff, and the general public that security measures are being reinforced to guarantee the safety of everyone on campus,” Ligari said, adding that the institution remains committed to maintaining a secure and conducive academic environment.
