The Munich Security Conference, a leading global forum on security, announced on Friday that it has withdrawn an invitation to Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, following the Tehran government’s crackdown on protests across Iran this week.
“Several weeks ago, invitations were extended to individual government representatives from Iran. In light of current events, the Munich Security Conference will not be maintaining these invitations,” the organizers said in a statement.
This year’s conference, scheduled for February 13-15, aims to bring together security experts, policymakers who can provide significant policy insights. The organizers noted that political developments are taken into account before finalizing invitations.
Germany’s foreign ministry supported the decision, citing the ongoing violence in Iran, where thousands have reportedly been killed in the government’s response to demonstrations against clerical rule.
The move underscores growing international concern over Iran’s handling of protests and human rights issues, ahead of a major gathering of global security officials.
