An abducted medical doctor, Dr. Ibrahim Tahir, has regained his freedom following the payment of N50 million ransom to his captors in Edo State.

Dr. Tahir and his younger brother were kidnapped on January 2, 2026, at their residence on City Pride Road, Igbira Camp, Auchi, while opening the gate to their compound.

Tragically, the younger brother’s body was discovered near Orley River, along City Pride Road, on January 5, and reports indicate he was killed by the abductors.

In a telephone interview on Thursday, father of the victims explained that the ransom was paid in two tranches of N20 million and N30 million, with the combined efforts of the family, non-governmental organisations, friends, and other well-wishers facilitating Dr. Tahir’s release.

The doctor regained his freedom on Wednesday evening around 8:00p.m.

He added that a bullet grazed Dr. Tahir’s leg during the ordeal, while one of the kidnappers sustained gunshot injuries following an ambush by vigilantes and hunters prior to the release.

“My son has been released by the kidnappers after we paid N50 million. I feel good that he is free, but I have also lost another son,” the father said. “The family, organizations, friends, and well-wishers contributed the N50 million ransom. My son was grazed by a bullet, but he is receiving treatment at a hospital.”

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Edo State Police Command, Eno Ikoedem, stated on Thursday, “I can confirm to you that the doctor has been released.”
