The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have called on the Federal Government to fast-track ongoing negotiations on conditions of service for their members.

In a statement on Wednesday, the JAC congratulated the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on the signing of a new agreement with the FG, describing it as a long-awaited breakthrough in improving the working conditions of academic staff.

The statement was jointly signed by Prince Peters Adeyemi, General Secretary of NASU, and Mohammed Ibrahim, President of SSANU and Chairman of JAC.

Like ASUU, both non-academic unions have been engaged in prolonged negotiations with the Federal Government over issues including salary structures, earned allowances, welfare, workplace safety, and funding for university infrastructure.

While welcoming the ASUU agreement, the unions warned that any further delay in concluding their own renegotiation could threaten industrial harmony within Nigeria’s university system.

The JAC said it had consistently demonstrated restraint and commitment to peace despite the government’s “continued insensitivity” to the plight of non-academic staff and the harsh conditions under which its members operate.

“Failure to act swiftly after the ASUU agreement would amount to an invitation to chaos and could disrupt the fragile industrial peace currently being maintained within the university system,” the statement read.

The unions stressed that the timely conclusion of negotiations with NASU and SSANU is essential to avert a breakdown of industrial peace and maintain stability within the tertiary education sector. They cautioned the Federal Government against employing delay tactics that could “stir the hornet’s nest.”
