French President, Emmanuel Macron has warned that any threat to the sovereignty of a European ally would trigger unprecedented consequences, as tensions rise over renewed interest by the United States in Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark.

Speaking during a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Macron said France was taking statements concerning Greenland very seriously, would stand firmly with Denmark in defense of its sovereignty. His comments were conveyed by French government spokesperson Maud Bregeon.

Macron stressed that if the sovereignty of a European country and ally were affected, the impact would go far beyond the immediate parties involved. He said France is closely monitoring developments and will act in full solidarity with Denmark.

Earlier on Wednesday, European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen also expressed strong support for Greenland, saying the relationship between the European Union and Greenland remains strong and that, Greenlanders can rely on the backing of the EU.

The diplomatic tension follows weeks of controversial remarks by United States President, Donald Trump, regarding control over Greenland, which has raised concerns across Europe about security, territorial integrity, international law.

Later on Wednesday, the foreign Ministers of Denmark and Greenland were scheduled to meet with United States Vice President, JD Vance at the White House, as efforts continue to defuse the situation through diplomatic engagement.

European leaders are increasingly unified in their response, signaling that any attempt to undermine the sovereignty of a European territory would be met with coordinated political, diplomatic resistance.
