The United States has revoked more than 100,000 visas since President Donald Trump returned to office, marking the highest number of visa revocations in a single year, the State Department confirmed on Monday.

The revocations, recorded since Trump’s second inauguration on January 20, 2025, are more than two and a half times the number carried out in 2024 under former President Joe Biden.

“The Trump administration has no higher priority than protecting American citizens and upholding American sovereignty,” State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said while confirming the figures.

According to the department, thousands of the visas were revoked due to criminal offences, including assault and driving under the influences.

Secretary of State, Marco Rubio has also drawn attention to the administration’s decision to revoke visas issued to some foreign students involved in protests against Israel. Rubio relied on a Cold War-era law that permits the United States to deny entry to or remove foreigners deemed to be acting against US foreign policy interests.

However, some of the affected individuals have successfully challenged deportation orders in court.

The State Department disclosed that about 8,000 of the revoked visas were issued to students.

In addition to revocations, the Trump administration has tightened visa screening procedures, including enhanced vetting of applicants’ social media activity.

The visa actions form part of a broader immigration crackdown, which includes an aggressive campaign of mass deportations supported by an expanded deployment of federal agents.

Last month, the Department of Homeland Security reported that more than 605,000 people had been deported under the current administration, while an additional 2.5 million migrants left the country voluntarily.
