Australia’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese has announced the early recall of Parliament, saying lawmakers will convene next week in response to the deadly Bondi attack that has shocked the nation, renewed debates around public safety and national security.

Speaking on Monday, Albanese said the decision was taken to allow Parliament urgently address the aftermath of the attack, consider security briefings and fast track discussions on measures aimed at preventing similar incidents.

The move comes as Australia continues to mourn victims of the Bondi stabbing attack, which left several people dead, many others injured. The incident has triggered nationwide vigils, an outpouring of grief, with political leaders and community figures calling for unity and calm.

Albanese, alongside his wife Jodie Haydon, attended the Light Over Darkness vigil in Sydney, where he joined Australians in honouring the victims. Also present were Governor General Sam Mostyn and Australia’s Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism, Jillian Segal, underscoring the government’s emphasis on social cohesion amid rising tensions.

Government officials say the early parliamentary sitting will focus on security assessments, law enforcement coordination and broader social issues linked to violent extremism. While no specific legislative proposals have yet been outlined, senior figures have indicated that bipartisan cooperation will be sought.

Australia has experienced heightened concern over public safety in recent years, with authorities warning of evolving threats and the need for vigilance. The Bondi attack has intensified calls for stronger preventive frameworks, even as leaders caution against politicizing the tragedy.

As Parliament prepares to reconvene, Albanese said the priority remains supporting victims’ families, reassuring the public, ensuring Australia’s democratic institutions respond decisively in moments of national crisis.
