The United States Senate has advanced a resolution seeking to block President Donald Trump from taking further military action against Venezuela without explicit authorization from Congress.

The measure passed on Thursday by a vote of 52 to 47, securing a simple majority and clearing the way for it to move to the House of Representatives for consideration.

The vote comes just days after US forces abducted Venezuelan President, Nicolas Maduro during a dramatic military operation in Caracas, an action that has intensified debate in Washington over the scope of presidential war powers.

The resolution is the latest in a series of legislative efforts introduced since the Trump administration escalated military pressure on Venezuela, including attacks on vessels off the country’s coast, beginning in September.

Republicans have largely opposed the measures, repeatedly blocking similar attempts. However, a previous vote in November narrowly failed after two Republican senators joined Democrats in support, resulting in a 49 to 51 outcome. At the time, administration officials told lawmakers there were no plans to change Venezuela’s government or carry out strikes on Venezuelan territory.

Thursday’s vote reflects growing concern among lawmakers over the administration’s military actions and the need for congressional oversight before any further escalation.

More developments are expected as the resolution moves to the House.
