The Nigerian Army’s 2 Brigade, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has cautioned members of the public against speculation that could prejudice ongoing investigations into the death of a 13-year-old minor, Timothy Daniel, which occurred on January 1, 2026.
The teenager was allegedly shot dead by a soldier attached to Sterling Petrochemical and Fertilizer Limited in Ette, Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of the state.
The incident reportedly occurred while the minor was attempting to intervene in an alleged inappropriate encounter involving his 15-year-old sister.
In a statement issued on Thursday in Uyo, the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Headquarters 2 Brigade, Capt. Lawal Muhammad, said investigations into the incident were still ongoing, that no conclusions had been reached.
According to him, the Nigerian Army had immediately instituted an investigation in line with standard procedures to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The investigation is currently ongoing, no findings or conclusions have been reached at this stage,” the statement read.
The Army spokesperson urged the general public to refrain from speculation or commentary capable of undermining the investigative process, assuring that the outcome of the probe would be made public upon its conclusion.
“Accordingly, the Nigerian Army urges the general public to refrain from speculation or commentary that may prejudice the investigative process,” Muhammad said.
“The outcome of the investigation will be made public upon its conclusion, in accordance with extant laws and regulations.”
Muhammad also conveyed sympathy and condolences of the Nigerian Army to the family of the deceased, while appreciating the understanding, cooperation of the public.
“The Nigerian Army expresses its sincere sympathy and condolences to the family and loved ones of Timothy Daniel and commiserates with them over their loss. We pray for the repose of his soul,” the statement added.
He further reiterated the Army’s commitment to professionalism, strict adherence to rules of engagement and accountability in the conduct of its personnel.
