Gunmen on Tuesday evening abducted a former member of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Mr. Moruf Musa, at Ibiade in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area of the state.
Musa, who served as Majority Leader of the Assembly between 2007 and 2011, was reportedly kidnapped at about 7:00p.m. while observing Muslim evening prayers inside a mosque located within his residence.
Confirming the incident on Wednesday, the Chairman of Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, Mr. Ganiyu Odunoiki said the abduction occurred during the prayer session, adding that the assailants fired gunshots along the road as they fled the area.
“The report is true. The former lawmaker was abducted on Tuesday evening,” Odunoiki said.
“The gunmen also reportedly shot sporadically along the road while escaping. We are currently combing the surrounding bushes with police officers, and we are expecting the anti-kidnapping unit, which is already on its way. The Area Commander from Ogbere is also on ground.”
The Ogun State Police Command also confirmed the incident.
In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi said the command was aware of the abduction, had activated security measures to ensure the victim’s safe return.
“The Ogun State Police Command is aware of the reported abduction of Hon. Musa Moruf in Ibiade, Ogun Waterside Local Government Area,” Babaseyi said.
“Security measures have been activated, including the deployment of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, the public is advised to remain calm, pending official updates.”
A source in the community said the former lawmaker reportedly struggled with his abductors for more than 20 minutes, attracting the attention of nearby residents.
According to the source, the gunmen fired sporadically into the air to scare people away before escaping with the victim.
As of the time of filing this report, search and rescue operations were ongoing.
