President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has spoken with Nigerian-British former heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, following the tragic road accident in Ogun State which claimed the lives of two of the boxer’s associates.
The President made the call on Monday to commiserate with Joshua, his family after the incident, which occurred on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. Joshua reportedly sustained injuries in the accident, he is currently receiving medical care.
According to a statement issued by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said he personally conveyed his condolences to the boxer, wished him a speedy recovery.
The President also disclosed that he spoke with Joshua’s mother, offering prayers, words of comfort.
In addition, Tinubu confirmed that he contacted the Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, who was with Joshua at the hospital.
The Governor reportedly assured the President that all necessary steps were being taken to ensure the boxer receives the best possible medical attention.
Earlier, President Tinubu, who is currently outside the country, had expressed sympathy in a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), describing Joshua as a source of national pride, urging unity, compassion in the face of tragedy.
“I sympathise with you, your family as you bear the emotional weight of this unfortunate incident,” the President wrote. “I pray for strength, speedy recovery, and for the repose of the souls of the departed.”
The accident has continued to draw reactions from Nigerians and members of the global boxing community, with many offering prayers, well-wishes for Joshua and the families of those who lost their lives.
