AKPABIO DONATES FISHING BOATS TO WOMEN IN AKWA IBOM

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, on Boxing Day donated 10 fully equipped outboard engine fishing boats to women, cooperative groups drawn from the Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District, as part of his constituency empowerment projects.

The presentation ceremony took place at his country home in Ukana, Essien Udim Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State.

Beneficiaries of the empowerment programme were selected from riverine communities across the state, where fishing remains the primary source of livelihood.

Speaking at the event, wife of the Senate President, Dr. Ekaette Akpabio, expressed appreciation to her husband for remembering women from the riverine areas of Akwa Ibom.

She explained that although the beneficiaries were drawn from the Eket Senatorial District, Akpabio’s position as Senate President places him in service to all Nigerians, irrespective of senatorial boundaries.

In his remarks, Senator Akpabio commended the women for their steadfast support over the years, noting that the empowerment initiative was his way of appreciating their prayers, loyalty.

“I can never forget your love; I can never forget your prayers; I can never forget your support. We are still standing strong because you are still praying,” he said.

The Senate President urged the beneficiaries to continue supporting the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while also commending Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, for prioritizing human capital development, touching lives across the state.

“The President is very happy with Akwa Ibom State. Governor Umo Eno has made us proud. He is touching lives and making sure human capital development is a major focus of his administration. Mine is to urge you to support him,” Akpabio added.

Executive Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Victor Antai, who coordinated the distribution, announced that each boat was fitted with fishing nets, refrigerators, extra fuel tanks.

He explained that the larger boats were powered by double 75-horsepower engines, while the smaller ones came with 40-horsepower engines, to enhance productivity and safety.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mma Nkoyo Isong expressed gratitude to Senator Akpabio, his wife for the intervention, describing it as a life-changing gesture which would significantly improve the economic wellbeing of women in the riverine communities.
