SGF UNVEILS 75 ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLES TO THE FRSC

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Sen. George Akume, has inaugurated 75 electric motorcycles for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

Akume described the initiative as a strategic boost to the FRSC’s operational capacity and Nigeria’s internal security framework.

Speaking in Abuja, he said the inauguration marked a milestone in strengthening the corps’ ability to safeguard lives and property, nationwide.

He added that the initiative reflected the Federal Government’s commitment under President Bola Tinubu’s administration towards improving safety and security.

According to Akume, the programme aligns with Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, prioritizing citizen protection, infrastructure security and to restored public confidence.

He noted that roads serve economic, social purposes, however are increasingly exploited for criminal activities.

“Crimes are being perpetrated on highways, taking advantage of congestion, traffic breakdowns and limited access in difficult terrains,” Akume said.

He described the electric motorcycles as timely, strategic; enhancing rapid response, manoeuvrability and surveillance, especially in congested and hard-to-reach areas.

Akume said the motorcycles would support highway patrols and improve operational effectiveness during emergencies and security interventions.

He added that the bikes were cost-effective, environmentally friendly, aligned with the administration’s clean energy and sustainable transport policies.

“Each motorcycle has a range of 150 to 160 kilometres per charge and a top speed of 100 kilometres per hour.

“They are equipped with sirens, amber lights, loudspeakers, digital displays, recording systems and secured compartments for enforcement equipment,” Akume said.

He said the initiative supported the President’s directive for a multi-agency, intelligence-driven and technology-supported security approach.

Akume stressed that security remained a collective responsibility, could not rest solely on government agencies.

He noted that while the FRSC was established for road safety, its role had evolved within Nigeria’s internal security architecture.

“Road safety and national security are inseparable. Safe roads reduce crime, support economic growth, unity and social stability,” he said.

Akume urged the FRSC to strengthen collaboration with security agencies through joint patrols, intelligence sharing, training, adequate equipping.

He commended the FRSC leadership, personnel for adaptability, innovation, dedication, accountability.

Akume expressed confidence that the motorcycles would be deployed responsibly, to support national security objectives.

In his remarks, FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, thanked the Federal Government and President Tinubu for the motorcycles.

He described the support as timely, noting that it recognized the corps’ expanding role within the national security framework.

“The Federal Government has remained steadfast through policy support, reforms, capacity building and operational equipment.

“This donation contributes to national security, and we do not take it for granted,” he said.

Mohammed said the timing was crucial, as the festive season brings increased traffic volumes, congestion, road crashes nationwide.

He said the motorcycles would be deployed immediately for traffic control, patrols, enforcement, escorts and special assignments.

“These bikes will enhance swift response, decongest highways, ensure Nigerians travel safely, confidently, without unnecessary delays,” he said.
