A female soldier, identified simply as Mohammed, and two children were injured on Wednesday following a hand grenade explosion at Maraba, Abacha Road, in Nasarawa State.
The incident occurred at about 11:46am on December 24, 2025, according to an incident report exclusively obtained by PUNCH Online on Friday.
Preliminary findings indicated that the explosion occurred when a woman brought out the explosive device from her apartment during cleaning, asked the soldier to help identify it.
The grenade reportedly detonated while being handled, injuring the soldier and the woman’s two children.
According to the report, the grenade had allegedly been left in the apartment three years earlier by a yet-to-be-identified soldier who was said to be serving in the North East at the time.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the grenade was brought by a yet-to-be-identified soldier serving in the North East three years ago.
The soldier left the grenade in his sister’s room, who is living in the same compound as Mohammed,” the report stated.
It further explained that the soldier’s sister discovered the grenade while cleaning her apartment, brought it out to ask Mohammed whether it was useful or should be discarded.
“However, upon receipt of confirmation, the grenade exploded immediately, causing severe injury to Mohammed’s left wrist and other parts of her body. Two children of the woman who brought out the grenade were also severely injured,” the report added.
“The victim was initially rushed to Nagari Allah Private Hospital, Keffi, by her sister and some co-tenants, but was later evacuated to DHQ Medical Centre, Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja. Subsequently, she was referred to Cedarcrest Hospital at Apo, where she is presently receiving treatment,” the report said.
It added that her condition had stabilized, that she was responding to treatment, while investigations were ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
