The Police Service Commission (PSC) has approved the promotion of several senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force to higher ranks, following the successful completion of written examinations, oral interviews held at the Commission’s Corporate Headquarters in Jabi, Abuja.
The promotion exercise, which concluded on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, was presided over by the Chairman of the Commission, DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (rtd).
According to the Commission, one Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Usman Gumel, was promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG). Gumel was until his elevation the AIG in charge of the Community Policing Project Department, Research and Planning at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Abuja.
Seven Commissioners of Police were also elevated to the rank of Assistant Inspectors-General of Police. They include Ihebom Chukwuma (FCID, Abuja), Maxwell Olatokunbo (K9), Abaniwonda Olufemi (Delta State), Alonyenu Francis Idu (Bayelsa State), Lawal B. Ayodeji (AHTU FCID Annex, Lagos), Agene Emmanuel (FCID, Kaduna), and Vungmoh S.M. Kwaimo (Railway Command).
In addition, 13 Deputy Commissioners of Police were promoted to the rank of Commissioner of Police, while 30 Assistant Commissioners of Police were elevated to Deputy Commissioners of Police.
The beneficiaries were drawn from various commands, formations, and specialized units across the country.
The Commission also approved the promotion of 51 Chief Superintendents of Police to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police, 542 Superintendents of Police to Chief Superintendent of Police, 119 Deputy Superintendents of Police to Superintendent of Police, and twelve Assistant Superintendents of Police to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police.
Congratulating the newly promoted officers, the PSC Chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), charged them to brace up to their new responsibilities with renewed dedication and professionalism.
He stressed that promotion comes with higher expectations, urged the officers to demonstrate greater commitment to effective policing, protection of lives and property, and the maintenance of law and order.

DIG Argungu reiterated the Commission’s resolve to sustain regular, merit-based promotions in line with best practices, noting that such measures are critical to boosting morale, enhancing efficiency within the Nigeria Police Force.
The promotions take immediate effect.
