The Federal Government of Nigeria has earmarked ₦2.1 billion for the revival of the renal replacement programme at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, Osun State.
The hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Professor John Okeniyi, disclosed this on Thursday, November 5, during the grand finale of the institution’s 50th-anniversary celebration in Ile-Ife.
Okeniyi explained that the funding had been appropriated as part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for the health sector.
He expressed optimism that the release and effective utilisation of the funds would enable the hospital to restore its renal replacement services and improve healthcare delivery for patients requiring kidney treatment.
The CMD, however, indicated that the appropriation had not yet translated into the full release and implementation of the funding.
He maintained that accessing the approved funds and deploying them appropriately would be essential to restoring the programme.
Renal replacement therapy encompasses medical treatments used to support patients whose kidneys can no longer adequately perform their functions, including dialysis and kidney transplantation.

Restoring the hospital’s capacity would therefore provide additional treatment opportunities for patients requiring specialised kidney care.
Speaking at the anniversary celebration, former Osun State Deputy Governor, Senator Iyiola Omisore, called for increased support for healthcare institutions and initiatives that directly improve people’s lives.
Omisore emphasised that healthcare remained fundamental to human well-being and urged individuals, organisations and other stakeholders to support medical interventions with lasting benefits.
Also addressing the gathering, Seyi Tinubu, represented by Lawal Umar, Chairman of the Tinubu/Shettima Grassroots Mobilisation group, called for greater attention to the practical impact of healthcare policies.
He maintained that progress in the health sector should be measured not only by infrastructure development and policy announcements but also by patients’ ability to access treatment, afford medication and recover from illnesses.

The anniversary celebration also featured recognition of individuals who had contributed to healthcare development and the institution’s growth.
The proposed restoration of OAUTHC’s renal programme is expected to strengthen specialised medical services if the appropriate funds are released and the rehabilitation is successfully implemented.
However, the hospital has not announced a confirmed completion date for the programme’s full restoration.
