Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has handed Brazilian winger Estêvão Willian his first Premier League start of the season for Saturday’s encounter against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.

The decision comes amid growing scrutiny over the 19-year-old’s limited playing opportunities since Alonso took charge of the London club.

Estêvão had previously started only twice in all competitions this season, with both appearances coming in the Carabao Cup.

His absence from the starting lineup had become a major talking point among supporters, particularly after Chelsea’s elimination from the League Cup against Liverpool on Wednesday.

Despite Chelsea’s attacking difficulties during that encounter, Alonso left the Brazilian on the bench throughout the match, which Liverpool won following a penalty shootout.

However, the manager has now included Estêvão in his starting eleven against Manchester United, giving the youngster an opportunity to demonstrate his attacking qualities.

According to Chelsea’s official team announcement, Estêvão joins Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Pedro Neto in the attacking lineup.

Moises Caicedo captains the side, while Romeo Lavia retains his place in midfield.

The defensive lineup includes Josh Acheampong, Wesley Fofana, Levi Colwill and Marco Palestra, with Mike Penders starting in goal.

Speaking ahead of the fixture, Alonso defended his handling of Estêvão and dismissed suggestions that the Brazilian could leave Chelsea on loan during the January transfer window.

The Spanish manager maintained that the youngster remained an important part of his plans despite his limited involvement.

Alonso explained that adapting to the tactical and physical demands of the Premier League required patience, particularly for younger players.

He also acknowledged responsibility for selection decisions that had restricted Estêvão’s playing time.

The manager praised the winger’s attitude in training and expressed confidence that he would receive more opportunities as the season progressed.

Estêvão’s return comes at an important moment for Chelsea, who are seeking to recover from recent disappointing results.

Manchester United, meanwhile, arrive at Stamford Bridge under considerable pressure following a prolonged run of poor performances under Michael Carrick.

For Estêvão, the fixture presents an opportunity to strengthen his case for regular first-team football and demonstrate why he remains highly regarded at Stamford Bridge.

Alonso’s decision also offers Chelsea another attacking option as the club seeks to improve its consistency in the Premier League.
