A 50-year-old American woman, Christa Pike, who survived a failed execution by lethal injection in Tennessee, has revealed that she continues to experience severe physical and emotional pain one month after the incident.

Pike disclosed this in her first public statement since the September 30, 2026, execution attempt, which was released by her lawyers on Friday, October 30.

The convicted murderer described persistent pain affecting her arms, hands and throat, adding that she still struggles to speak and has experienced significant psychological distress.

She said she entered the execution chamber at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville believing she would die, having already said goodbye to those closest to her.

However, she regained consciousness several days later in a hospital, confused and suffering from serious medical complications.

Pike had been administered two doses of pentobarbital, the drug used by Tennessee authorities for lethal injections, but the procedure failed to cause her death.

She was subsequently transported to hospital in critical condition and placed on a ventilator before recovering sufficiently to return to prison.

Her lawyers disclosed that she suffered swelling, burns and blistering around her arms following the procedure.

Medical experts have suggested that complications involving intravenous access may have prevented the drugs from entering her bloodstream as intended, although the precise cause remains under investigation.

Pike was sentenced to death in 1996 for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, whom she and her boyfriend tortured and killed in Knoxville when Pike was 18.

Following the failed execution, her lawyers renewed appeals for Tennessee Governor Bill Lee to commute her death sentence to life imprisonment.

Lee subsequently suspended the state’s remaining scheduled executions for 2026 and ordered an independent investigation into the incident.

However, the governor indicated that Pike’s death sentence would likely remain unchanged unless a court ruled otherwise.

According to the Death Penalty Information Centre, Pike is the only person known to have survived an American execution attempt after lethal injection drugs were administered.

The incident has renewed scrutiny of execution procedures and concerns about the physical suffering associated with failed lethal injections.

Pike, who remains under medical care in prison, said she was gradually recovering but remained uncertain about her future.
