The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has handed over a bank draft worth ₦1.05 billion for 659 disengaged employees of the Adamawa State Post-Primary Schools Management Board following a prolonged dispute over their unpaid entitlements.

The commission’s Gombe Zonal Directorate presented the draft, valued at ₦1,054,919,532.61, to the beneficiaries’ legal representative on Thursday.

According to a statement by EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, the recovery followed investigations into a petition concerning the non-payment of salaries and other benefits owed to the affected workers.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, the Acting Zonal Director, Austine Adache, reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to recovering funds and ensuring restitution to rightful beneficiaries.

Adache said the EFCC would continue to pursue accountability and protect individuals affected by financial misconduct.

The dispute dates back to the employment of the affected workers by the Adamawa State Government. The beneficiaries maintained that they served in secondary schools across the state for 29 months before their appointments were declared illegal in 2014.

Following the government’s decision, the workers instituted legal proceedings at the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, seeking payment of their outstanding entitlements.

The court subsequently ruled in their favour, ordering the state government to settle the outstanding obligations.

However, difficulties in enforcing the judgment led to garnishee proceedings against government bank accounts.

In 2024, Abraham B. Song petitioned the EFCC over the matter, prompting an investigation into the funds intended for the affected workers.

The commission said intelligence received during the investigation raised concerns about possible misapplication of the money.

It subsequently took measures to preserve the funds, facilitating their eventual recovery and handover.

Receiving the bank draft on behalf of the beneficiaries, their counsel, Luka Musa Haruna, SAN, commended the EFCC for its intervention and efforts to secure the outstanding entitlements.

Song also expressed appreciation, saying the development would help address the financial hardship experienced by the affected workers.

The handover represents a significant development in a dispute that has lasted more than a decade.

However, the presentation of the bank draft does not necessarily mean that all 659 beneficiaries have received their individual payments. Details of the distribution process were not provided.

The EFCC maintained that its intervention reflected its commitment to recovering funds and ensuring that rightful beneficiaries receive financial restitution.
