The Federal High Court in Lagos has reportedly refused a fresh bail application filed by businessman and social media influencer Afolabi Kazeem Michael, popularly known as KC Luxury, who is standing trial over alleged trafficking of 184.5 kilogrammes of cocaine and money laundering.

Justice Musa Kakaki, in a ruling delivered on Wednesday, held that the defence had failed to establish sufficient medical grounds to justify the defendant’s release.

According to an account of the proceedings, the judge directed the Ikoyi Custodial Centre to ensure that Kazeem had access to doctors and medical specialists whenever necessary.

The court also ordered an accelerated hearing and fixed November 2, 2026, for the commencement of trial.

Kazeem’s lawyer, Emefo Etudo, had asked the court to reconsider its earlier refusal of bail, arguing that his client’s health had deteriorated and required specialised medical attention.

During proceedings on October 23, Kazeem was brought to the court premises in an ambulance while receiving oxygen.

A nurse from the Police Hospital in Falomo, Lagos, told the court that the defendant had been diagnosed with asthma and sepsis.

Etudo also alleged that his client had suffered serious lung complications and required treatment at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.

However, prosecution counsel Abu Ibrahim opposed the application, maintaining that the medical issues raised had previously been considered by the court.

He argued that the defence had not presented sufficient evidence to establish circumstances warranting a fresh grant of bail.

In Wednesday’s reported ruling, Justice Kakaki reviewed the medical documents and earlier proceedings before concluding that the defence had not demonstrated a material change in circumstances.

The judge maintained that appropriate medical care could be arranged for the defendant while he remained in custody.

Kazeem is standing trial alongside Boniface Freeman Ochoche Sule and Ikechukwu Ekugo Patriarch on a 22-count charge filed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.

The prosecution alleges that the defendants participated in a conspiracy to export 184.5kg of cocaine to the United Kingdom through five consignments.

They are also facing related money-laundering allegations.

All three defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The court had previously rejected their bail applications on October 2, citing the seriousness of the alleged offences and concerns that they might abscond.

The defendants remain presumed innocent unless convicted by a court of competent jurisdiction.
