At least 20 people are feared dead and several others injured following a multiple-vehicle crash at Hwan Kibo in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The crash occurred at about 5pm on Friday and reportedly involved a truck and several other vehicles.

Residents and motorists rushed to the scene following the collision, as emergency responders worked to evacuate victims. Community accounts indicated that several people were trapped in the affected vehicles, while those injured were taken to hospitals for treatment.

The Plateau State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Corps Commander Adelaja Ogungbemi, confirmed the crash and attributed it to brake failure.

According to Ogungbemi, the truck suffered a braking-system failure before colliding with other vehicles.

“The crash was caused by brake failure,” he said.

He said FRSC personnel responded to the incident, evacuated injured victims and transported them to medical facilities for treatment.

The sector commander urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained and roadworthy before embarking on journeys.

He particularly advised drivers to regularly inspect braking systems and other critical components and to address mechanical faults promptly.

Ogungbemi also urged motorists to exercise caution and comply with road-safety measures to reduce the risk of preventable crashes.

The reported death toll remained preliminary, with authorities yet to provide a final casualty figure as emergency response and assessment continued.
