The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has officially confirmed the United States as host of the inaugural FIFA Women’s Club World Cup, scheduled to take place from January 5 to 30, 2028.

The announcement, made on Thursday, marks another significant development in FIFA’s efforts to expand women’s football and provide leading clubs with greater opportunities to compete internationally.

According to the world football governing body, the United States was selected because of its experience in organising major international football competitions, modern sporting infrastructure and growing interest in women’s football.

The tournament will bring together 19 clubs from FIFA’s six continental confederations, with 16 teams competing in the main group stage after a preliminary qualification phase.

Under the approved format, six clubs will participate in a preliminary play-in round, with three winners advancing to join 13 directly qualified teams.

The main competition will feature four groups of four teams, with the top two clubs from each group progressing to the knockout stage.

FIFA said qualification would be determined by clubs’ performances in their respective continental competitions during the qualifying period.

Seven clubs have already secured places in the historic competition.

They include Arsenal Women of England, Barcelona Femení of Spain, Club América Femenil and Gotham FC from North America, Corinthians of Brazil, Wuhan Jiangda of China and Naegohyang Women’s FC of North Korea.

The remaining 12 places will be determined through continental qualification arrangements.

The competition is expected to provide a global platform for women’s club football, allowing leading teams from Africa, Europe, Asia, North America, South America and Oceania to compete for international recognition.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has previously described the introduction of the Women’s Club World Cup as an important step towards developing women’s football and expanding commercial opportunities for clubs and players.

The tournament will be held every four years, complementing the FIFA Women’s Champions Cup, which was introduced to provide further international competition between continental club champions.

The United States’ selection follows its hosting of the expanded men’s FIFA Club World Cup in 2025 and its role as co-host of the 2026 men’s FIFA World Cup alongside Canada and Mexico.

The country is also preparing to co-host the 2031 FIFA Women’s World Cup with Costa Rica, Jamaica and Mexico.

The 2028 competition will take place months after the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil and ahead of the Summer Olympic Games scheduled for Los Angeles.

While FIFA has confirmed the host country and tournament dates, further announcements are expected regarding match venues, ticketing arrangements and the remaining qualified clubs.

The inaugural competition is intended to strengthen the international profile of women’s club football and create new opportunities for players, clubs, commercial partners and supporters worldwide.
