American billionaire Elon Musk has announced plans to give one share of SpaceX to every child in the United States in 2027, a proposed donation estimated to be worth approximately $10.7 billion.
Musk disclosed the initiative on Monday, October 19, through his social media platform, X, describing the planned distribution as the beginning of a broader effort to share the benefits of technological innovation.
With approximately 73 million children under the age of 18 in the United States, the donation could involve the transfer of millions of shares in the aerospace and artificial intelligence company.

Based on SpaceX’s closing share price of $146.03 on October 16, the proposed giveaway would be valued at approximately $10.66 billion.
However, the final value would depend on the company’s share price when the transfer takes place.
United States President Donald Trump welcomed the announcement, indicating that the shares would be distributed through government-backed children’s investment accounts known as Trump Accounts.
The programme, established under legislation signed in 2025, provides a framework for tax-advantaged investment accounts intended to help young Americans accumulate assets.
Under temporary regulations issued by the US Treasury Department in September, eligible donors can contribute qualifying publicly traded company shares to the accounts.
Such shares are generally subject to restrictions preventing their sale for five years or until the beneficiary reaches the end of the programme’s childhood investment period, whichever comes first.
Although Musk has announced his intention to distribute the shares, he has not publicly provided a complete timetable, detailed eligibility requirements or the final arrangements for transferring the investments.

SpaceX became a publicly traded company in June 2026, listing its shares on the Nasdaq at an initial offering price of $135.
The proposed donation would represent only a relatively small portion of Musk’s overall holdings, meaning the billionaire could retain substantial influence over the company after completing the transfers.
Financial experts have also highlighted the potential tax advantages associated with donating appreciated shares, although the precise treatment would depend on the structure of the transaction and applicable regulations.
The announcement comes shortly before the November 3 United States midterm elections, with Musk remaining a major financial contributor to Republican political groups.
While the timing has attracted political attention, no evidence establishes that the proposed distribution is conditional on electoral support.
The pledge follows a separate announcement by artificial intelligence company Anthropic that it would allocate part of its equity to a public benefit initiative.
For potential beneficiaries, the value of the proposed gift would remain subject to stock market fluctuations and investment restrictions.
As of October 21, Musk’s announcement remains a pledge, with no confirmation that the SpaceX shares have been distributed to children’s accounts.
