Former Governor of Delta State, Dr Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, has died at the age of 71, just three days before his 72nd birthday.
His death was announced by his family on Monday, October 19, 2026, in a statement signed by his son, Toju Anire Uduaghan, on behalf of the family.
According to the statement, the former governor passed away on Monday morning, bringing to an end a distinguished career in medicine, politics and public service.

The family described his passing as a devastating loss, paying tribute to his leadership, personal sacrifices and contributions to the development of Delta State and Nigeria.
Uduaghan, who was born on October 22, 1954, served as governor of Delta State for eight years, from May 29, 2007, to May 29, 2015.
Before becoming governor, he served as Commissioner for Health between 1999 and 2003 and Secretary to the Delta State Government from 2003 to 2007.
A medical doctor by profession, Uduaghan studied medicine at the University of Benin and practised before entering public office.
During his administration, he promoted the Delta Beyond Oil development agenda, which sought to diversify the state’s economy and reduce dependence on petroleum revenue.
His government also pursued programmes in healthcare, education and infrastructure, including initiatives aimed at improving maternal and child healthcare services.
In its announcement, the family remembered Uduaghan as a devoted father, respected elder and influential public figure whose contributions extended beyond his immediate household.
It expressed gratitude to God for his life and years of service, while praying for comfort and strength for relatives, friends, political associates and others affected by his death.

Uduaghan’s passing comes at a time when his family and associates would ordinarily have been preparing to celebrate his 72nd birthday on Thursday, October 22.
His death marks the loss of a former state leader who played a significant role in Delta’s political and administrative history.
The family has not disclosed the cause of death or announced funeral arrangements.
Further details are expected to be communicated by the family.
