Veteran Nigerian diplomat, journalist, historian and elder statesman, Ambassador Patrick Dele Cole, has died at the age of 86.
Cole reportedly passed away in London on Saturday, October 17, 2026, following a period of declining health.
Family sources disclosed that the former Nigerian ambassador had experienced health challenges in recent weeks and had reportedly been discharged from intensive care shortly before his death.
His passing marks the end of a distinguished career spanning journalism, diplomacy, politics, academia and public administration.
Born on August 4, 1940, in Abonnema, Rivers State, Cole became one of Nigeria’s prominent public intellectuals, contributing to national discourse and institutional development for several decades.
DISTINGUISHED CAREER IN JOURNALISM
Cole played a significant role in shaping modern Nigerian journalism, particularly during his tenure as Managing Director of the Daily Times, a position he assumed in 1976.

His leadership helped strengthen the newspaper’s editorial structure, professional standards and institutional independence during a challenging period in Nigeria’s political history.
He was widely recognised for promoting editorial independence and encouraging journalism that held public officials accountable.
Cole also contributed to the development of The Guardian newspaper and later served on its editorial board, where his historical knowledge and political analysis informed public debate.
His influence extended beyond newspaper management to mentoring journalists, strengthening editorial institutions and promoting responsible public commentary.
SERVICE IN DIPLOMACY AND GOVERNMENT
Beyond journalism, Cole represented Nigeria in important diplomatic assignments, including service as ambassador to Brazil and Argentina.
His diplomatic responsibilities involved promoting Nigeria’s international interests and strengthening relations with foreign governments.
He later served as Special Adviser on International Relations to former President Olusegun Obasanjo during his civilian administration between 1999 and 2007.
Cole was also involved in Nigerian politics, including activities associated with the Social Democratic Party during the country’s transition programmes in the 1990s.
His academic background included studies at the University of Otago in New Zealand and the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom, where he earned a doctorate in history.
Throughout his career, he remained an outspoken commentator on governance, democracy, public accountability and national development.
TINUBU MOURNS DELE COLE
President Bola Tinubu has expressed sadness over Cole’s death, describing him as a distinguished Nigerian whose contributions to journalism, diplomacy and public service left a lasting impact.
In a condolence statement issued on Saturday, Tinubu praised the former ambassador’s commitment to national development and his role in strengthening democratic institutions.
The President particularly acknowledged Cole’s contributions to the Nigerian media industry, noting that his leadership demonstrated the importance of an independent press in promoting accountability.
Tinubu said Cole’s professional life reflected the values of dialogue, mutual respect and cooperation in public service.
He extended condolences to the deceased’s family, friends and professional associates, praying for strength and comfort during the period of mourning.
OBASANJO PAYS TRIBUTE
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo also mourned Cole, describing him as an exceptional intellectual and trusted associate whose counsel contributed to important decisions in Nigeria’s history.
Obasanjo recalled their longstanding relationship, which began during his years in military government and continued into his civilian presidency.
He acknowledged Cole’s contributions to Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements, particularly during efforts to strengthen the country’s international relationships.

The former President described the death as both a personal loss and a significant loss to the nation.
Cole was also the father of Tonye Cole, the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Rivers State during the 2023 general elections.
His death has drawn tributes from political figures, journalists and associates who remember his contributions to national development.
As Nigeria mourns the veteran diplomat, his legacy remains closely associated with journalism, public service, intellectual engagement and the promotion of accountable governance.
