Opposition political parties in Enugu State have called for an independent investigation into alleged attacks, intimidation and harassment of their members and supporters ahead of the forthcoming elections.
Representatives of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Labour Party (LP), African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) raised the concerns during a joint press conference.
The parties alleged that incidents involving opposition supporters, campaign offices and political gatherings had created security concerns and could undermine peaceful political participation.
Speaking at the event, PDP governorship candidate Wakibiah Uche Nnaji and other opposition leaders urged security agencies to investigate the allegations and ensure that political parties could conduct their activities without intimidation.
The NDC governorship candidate, Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa, alleged that supporters who gathered to welcome him at Akanu Ibiam International Airport were attacked and exposed to tear gas.
He claimed that vehicles were damaged, journalists’ mobile phones were seized, nd several supporters sustained injuries during the incident.

Ohaa further alleged that his campaign office was subsequently attacked, leaving some individuals with injuries requiring emergency medical attention.
He also questioned the reported arrest of a young man who allegedly livestreamed the incident, calling on the authorities to explain the circumstances surrounding his detention.
Similarly, ADC governorship candidate Chief Ocho Obodoeze expressed concern over alleged attacks and threats against members of his party.
Obodoeze said incidents involving ADC supporters at public gatherings had been documented and reported to the Department of State Services.
He urged security agencies to provide adequate protection for political gatherings and uphold the rights of citizens to participate freely in democratic activities.
The coalition also alleged that more than 15 people were shot during an incident involving a community associated with an NDC senatorial candidate.
According to the opposition leaders, several victims required emergency medical treatment. They called for an investigation to establish the circumstances of the incident and identify those responsible.
The allegations, including the reported shootings, have not been independently verified, and responsibility for the incidents has not been established.

The parties urged the police and other security agencies to investigate the complaints impartially and prosecute anyone found responsible in accordance with the law.
They also appealed for greater attention to electoral security in Enugu State, warning that unresolved allegations of violence could discourage citizens from participating in political activities.
The opposition leaders called on political parties and candidates to respect democratic rights, honour peace commitments and avoid inflammatory statements capable of increasing tensions.
Despite the allegations, the coalition reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful and issue-based campaigns, stressing that political differences should be resolved through lawful and democratic processes.
