A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Ifo Constituency I in the Ogun State House of Assembly, Adebari Adekunle, has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to address the controversy surrounding the reported exclusion of the party’s governorship candidate from the final list of candidates for the 2027 elections.

Adekunle warned that failure to resolve the dispute transparently could heighten political tension and undermine public confidence in the electoral process.

The controversy followed the publication of a final candidate list reportedly signed by INEC Secretary Rose Oriaran-Anthony, containing nominees from 13 political parties but excluding the PDP.

Adekunle expressed concern over the omission of the party’s governorship candidate, Oladipupo Adebutu, and his running mate, Lateefat Sowunmi-Kolapo, describing the development as an issue affecting democratic participation in Ogun State.

He also cautioned the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Senator Solomon Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, against actions that could escalate political disagreements.

The PDP candidate questioned reports that some APC supporters had anticipated the removal of certain names from the electoral list before its publication.

According to him, such reports, if substantiated, would raise concerns about public confidence in the independence of the electoral process.

Adekunle also referred to remarks attributed to President Bola Tinubu about the conduct of political associates, arguing that political leaders should discourage actions that can damage democratic institutions.

He urged the Presidency to ensure that the President’s name was not used by individuals seeking political advantage through questionable means.

The assembly candidate claimed that the exclusion had generated dissatisfaction among some residents, adding that community leaders and other stakeholders were appealing for calm.

He warned that unresolved electoral disputes could create unnecessary tension, particularly as political activities intensified ahead of the general elections.

Adekunle maintained that electoral institutions must provide a level playing field for political parties and candidates, while ensuring that disputes are handled in accordance with the law.

He called on INEC to explain the circumstances surrounding the PDP’s reported omission and take appropriate steps to address any established irregularities.

The candidate also urged political parties and their supporters to exercise restraint and avoid statements or activities capable of provoking unrest.

Adekunle insisted that the political interests of individuals should not override the need for peaceful, transparent and credible elections.

The allegations concerning the APC candidate and INEC remain claims made by Adekunle and do not, on their own, establish wrongdoing.

The legal or administrative basis for the PDP’s reported exclusion was not established in the information available for this report.
