The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested a 27-year-old woman, Precious Yohanna, over the alleged killing of her newborn baby in the Jabi area of Abuja.

Police said the investigation began after the command received a distress call at about 10:30 p.m. on October 4 concerning the discovery of an abandoned infant in a bush.

Operatives from the Jabi Division were deployed to the area and recovered the baby, who was subsequently confirmed dead at a hospital.

Following the discovery, FCT Commissioner of Police Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi ordered an investigation and a search for the person responsible.

The command said detectives, acting on intelligence and information from members of the community, subsequently arrested Yohanna, who resides in the Daki-Biu/Jabi area of the FCT.

According to preliminary police findings, the suspect allegedly gave birth to the child in her room at about 4 p.m. on October 3 before killing the newborn and later abandoning the body.

Police further alleged that Yohanna told investigators that her actions were connected to resentment towards the child’s father. The allegation remains subject to investigation and has not been determined by a court.

Sanusi commended residents for providing information that assisted investigators and assured the public that the circumstances surrounding the incident would be thoroughly investigated.

The police said Yohanna remained in custody and would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.

The FCT Police Command also urged residents to report suspicious activities and incidents to security agencies, reiterating its commitment to protecting lives across the territory.
