The Edo State Police Command has launched an investigation into the death of a senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, who was reportedly found unresponsive in a hotel room.

Uwuigbe, a lecturer in the university’s Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science, reportedly died on Monday, October 5, at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.

Police have detained the hotel owner, manager and a 21-year-old woman who was reportedly with the lecturer before his death as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police Public Relations Officer ASP Eno Ikoedem said the command received a report at about 8 p.m. that Uwuigbe had lodged at the hotel and was in the company of the woman, identified as Angela Defa Jacob.

According to the police account, the lecturer later asked the woman to leave the room to buy water. She reportedly returned and found him unresponsive before raising the alarm.

“The woman returned to the room and discovered Uwuigbe lying lifeless, prompting the report to the police,” Ikoedem said.

The police said the detention of the three individuals formed part of the ongoing investigation and did not establish responsibility for the lecturer’s death.

Uwuigbe’s remains were deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital Mortuary pending further investigation.

Ambrose Alli University confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of its academic staff but said the incident occurred outside the institution and was unrelated to official university activities.

The university’s spokesperson, Otunba Aladenika, also said the woman involved was not a student of the institution.

“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life. The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” he said.

Police have not announced a cause of death, and no allegation of criminal responsibility has been established against any of those detained as the investigation continues.
