Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has approved the promotion of 18,984 teaching and non-teaching staff of the State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, covering the January and July 2026 promotion cycles.

The approval followed a request by the Executive Chairman of Kano SUBEB, Yusuf Kabir, for ₦235,116,339.09 to implement the promotions across the state’s 44 Local Government Education Authorities, LGEAs.

According to a statement by the Director-General of Media and Publicity at the Government House, Sunusi Tofa, the beneficiaries are eligible workers whose promotion processes have been completed.

The affected employees will have their salaries adjusted to reflect their new ranks following the approval.

SUBEB said timely implementation of promotions was important to staff motivation, career progression and improved service delivery in the state’s basic education system.

The board said it has about 60,000 teaching and non-teaching personnel working across the 44 LGEAs, making it one of Kano State’s largest public-sector institutions.

According to the statement, the Yusuf administration inherited promotion backlogs extending for as long as seven years, alongside another backlog of about one and a half years.

The government said the outstanding promotions had since been approved and implemented, helping to improve staff morale and confidence in the system.

SUBEB said it had also completed the necessary processes for the 2026 promotion exercise, including verification of eligible personnel and computation of the resulting salary adjustments.

The Kano State Executive Council subsequently approved the proposal, clearing the way for the release of funds required to implement the promotions.

The state government said the latest exercise reflects its commitment to improving the welfare, motivation and career development of workers in the basic education sector.
